Die C-Kompanie einer US-Division soll die Marine beim Erobern der pazifischen Solomoneninsel Guadalcanal unterstützen. Die Soldaten sind allesamt unterschiedlich und jeder hat eine andere Intention: Private Witt verschwindet gerne zum einfachen Naturvolk der Insel, First Sergeant Edward Welsh deckt ihn dabei und hat sonst aber wenig Hoffnung, Private Jack Bell möchte so schnell es geht wieder zurück zu seiner Frau und Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Tall will Karriere machen.
